- Hours/days: Full-time preferred, with some flexibility required
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced and highly capable Senior House Manager & Cook to join a private family household near Burford in the beautiful Cotswolds.
This is a varied and hands-on senior role, combining household management, team supervision, family cooking and practical PA support. Working closely with the Principals, you will take responsibility for ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the household, anticipating the family’s needs and ensuring that everything is organised, well maintained and completed to a high standard.
The ideal candidate will be proactive, exceptionally organised and naturally attentive to detail, with the confidence to manage a household team, coordinate suppliers and contractors, oversee family logistics and take ownership of whatever needs doing.
Key Responsibilities:
- Taking overall day-to-day responsibility for the smooth running and organisation of the household
- Proactively identifying household and family requirements, prioritising tasks and ensuring matters are followed through to completion
- Managing and supporting household staff, including schedules, holiday requests, cover, delegation and day-to-day coordination
- Maintaining excellent household routines, systems and organisation
- Coordinating maintenance, repairs, contractors and suppliers, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with trusted local suppliers and service providers
- Preparing healthy, delicious family meals in line with dietary requirements and preferences
- Planning menus and managing grocery shopping, food ordering, kitchen stocks and pantry supplies
- Supporting entertaining, dinners and family events, including cooking and coordinating external caterers where appropriate
- Ensuring the home is properly prepared before events and restored afterwards
- Providing practical PA support, including travel and appointment bookings, diary coordination, reservations and managing family schedules
- Monitoring school communications and helping ensure uniforms, lunches, equipment and other practical requirements are organised
- Assisting the family with travel preparation and packing
- Undertaking occasional errands and driving as required, including driving family members when needed
- Overseeing household technology and systems, including Wi-Fi, AV, security and connected devices
- Maintaining inventories and ensuring the appropriate care of artwork, silverware, tableware, linens and other significant household possessions
- Keeping household records, supplier details, warranties and service information organised and up to date
The Ideal Candidate Will Have:
- 10+ years’ experience managing a private household or similarly complex environment
- Previous experience supervising staff and coordinating multiple competing priorities
- Strong household management and organisational skills, with an ability to anticipate requirements and stay ahead
- Confident family cooking skills and a genuine enjoyment of preparing fresh, healthy and attractive food
- Excellent communication skills and the confidence to manage staff, suppliers and contractors
- A proactive, accountable and solutions-focused approach, with the ability to work independently
- Strong technological confidence, including digital calendars, online administration, Wi-Fi, AV and household systems
- Good knowledge of Oxfordshire and established relationships with trusted local suppliers would be advantageous
- A discreet, warm and professional manner, with an excellent understanding of confidentiality and privacy
- A full, clean driving licence and confidence driving locally
- Flexibility around occasional travel, school commitments, entertaining and particularly busy periods
