School Engagement Employer Award - Highly Commended

A couple of weeks ago The Burford Recruitment Company were nominated by OxLEP Skills in the ‘School Engagement Employer Award’ category at this years' Oxfordshire Apprentice Awards.  The School Engagement Employer Award is a new award created to "recognise organisations that have exceeded normal standards and expectations in engaging with local schools and colleges to inspire the next generation".

It was a huge honour to be nominated and even more so to make the final three. It was also a little bit of David versus Goliath, being up against some pretty big organisations in Morgan Sindall Construction & Infrastructure Ltd and Pearson Education, both of whom have made huge efforts to engage with local school especially during the pandemic, and while we did not win we were delighted to come away with a 'Highly Commended' Award which arrived in the post this week and now sits proudly beside our WOBA.

Working with OxLEP Skills as Enterprise Advisors over the last year has been really rewarding and we would encourage any business that wants to engage with the community and especially with local schools and colleges to get in touch.

IT & Engineering expert joins the team!

The Burford Recruitment Company are delighted to announce that Andy Hudson-Shaw has joined the team as a Recruitment Partner to further expand the Technical division, focusing on recruitment in the IT and Engineering sectors.

Andy has over 20 years' experience in the recruitment industry, predominantly recruiting for Engineering and IT roles across the Oxfordshire and Thames Valley region. He has recruited for roles ranging from IT Support, Software/Web Development, Project Management through to Senior appointments. On the Engineering side, his experience covers Electro/Mechanical, Design/Production, Quality from Engineers through to Management level roles. Andy is a Certified DiSC trainer who is keen to ensure that the people he works with are closely matched in terms of both technical and interpersonal skills.

Andy joins Chris Hannah (Manufacturing & Supply Chain) and Maxine Harper (Industrial) ensuring The Burford Recruitment Company can support our clients with all areas of Technical Recruitment.

School Engagement Employer Award - Finalists

In 2020 our Directors, Jodie and Chris and our Andy (our new Recruitment Partner) became Enterprise Advisors to help local schools and colleges engage with businesses in order to develop their careers programs.

Throughout the last year they have all worked with Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership (OxLEP Skills) and the local schools and colleges to:

  • Participate in both face to face (Pre pandemic) and virtual mock interviews with students from various schools
  • Provide on line presentations on soft skills to students and course representatives
  • Provide free CV advice and writing services to students approaching graduation
  • Introduced careers leaders to businesses around Oxfordshire through networking
  • Ensured all students throughout Oxfordshire would have access to free CV and interview guidance throughout 2021 through participation in the 'Find your Future' virtual careers platform

Enabling Jodie and Chris to work with the schools, and to take the time to create and provide the content has been a real team effort, and everyone at The Burford Recruitment Company were delighted to be nominated for the ‘School Engagement Employer Award’ by OxLEP at this years' Oxfordshire Apprentice Awards.

The Burford Recruitment Company have expanded our team, and welcome Maxine in the role of Senior Recruitment Consultant to manage temporary and contract recruitment across the Professional and Technical sectors.

Maxine's focus will be on developing our offering, ensuring clients receive the same 'Award-Winning' service which saw The Burford Recruitment Company receive a prestigious West Oxfordshire Business Award in 2020 for our permanent recruitment service.

We have been watching the employment market closely during the last 12 months, and having noted an increase in demand for temporary and contract professional and technical staff, we believe our clients will immediately benefit from Maxine's arrival and her expertise. Having already spent 5 years working within local recruitment businesses, Maxine is keen to use her experience to continue helping Oxfordshire businesses.

Sarah Owens – Kickstart Scheme

We are excited to announce that The Burford Recruitment Company have created a Recruitment Team Administrator position as part of the Kickstart Scheme.

Sarah Owens started a 6 month placement in March 2021 and has immediately hit the ground running, bringing a positive enthusiastic attitude to all the tasks she is set, and a desire to learn and contribute to the team.

What is the Kickstart scheme?

The Kickstart Scheme supports employers who are able offer a six month work placement for young people. Importantly, these placements must provide regular paid work which is of value, and which will help young people to develop transferrable skills for their future career. The purpose of the scheme is to improve employability, and the chances of sustained employment for those particularly at risk of long term unemployment (16-24-year-old age group).

 

This is achieved through the creation of new jobs that might not otherwise exist, providing work which incentivises positive behaviours to make young people more attractive to future employers and improve their readiness to transition into long term employment, giving them the confidence and competence to succeed.

What can Sarah expect?

Sarah will receive on-the-job training in a busy office environment, developing soft skills such as communication and teamwork. She will receive mentoring, careers advice and support with CV and interview preparation, and if it is not possible to extend the placement at the end of six months, we will also be best placed to ensure that she receives expert support in finding her next role.

WOBA WINNERS – Cally Robson Award 2020

Four years ago, when we were preparing to launch the business, we had a conversation about what we wanted to achieve in the first 5 years. Many of the things we spoke about have now been achieved. We have steadily grown, moved into our own office, employed our first member of staff, and importantly remained profitable. However, the very first thing on our founder Jodie’s list was to win a West Oxfordshire Business Award (WOBA)…

A number of our clients, and many of the best and well regarded businesses in West Oxfordshire are either previous winners or have been involved in the awards in some other way during the 10 years they have been running, whether that is through sponsoring  an award or being part of the WOBA judging team.

We were therefore really excited to be finalists this year in not one, but two categories (New Business Award and Micro Business Award). The virtual awards ceremony took place on Friday afternoon, and I have to admit we were disappointed not to take either of those awards home.

That disappointment was short lived however and we were delighted (and stunned as you will see if you watch the video clip below!) to be presented with the prestigious Cally Robson Award! This award in particular is incredibly special for a number of reasons…

The Cally Robson Award commemorates an inspirational former member of the WOBA Team. It is not an award that you can enter, this award is presented by the WOBA judges to the finalist that best represents the WOBA values of entrepreneurship, innovation, and a sense of community. With so many great businesses in the finals to be recognised in this way was just amazing.

I would recommend that any business in the West Oxfordshire area should get involved in the WOBAs when they return in 2022 (after 10 years they are having a year off). I certainly hope that there will be an opportunity for us to contribute going forwards in some capacity. A CHANGING JOB MARKET

COVID-19 has already had a major impact on individuals and businesses, and it is likely that it will continue to cause major disruption for months to come. It remains unclear what damage will be done, however we have been warned that it is just not possible to “save every job and every business”, and that we should prepare for the fact that large numbers of people are likely to find themselves out of work, as businesses close or cut costs to stay afloat.

We must all accept that the job market is fundamentally changing. The number of people looking for work is going to increase significantly, while at the same time the number of available roles is likely to reduce, increasing competition and turning what has been a ‘candidate market’ on its head. You must therefore adapt or be left behind!

Increased competition, and increased applications for each available role means your CV needs to be of good quality, and your recruitment partners need to know your preferences in what is likely to be a changing market.

We have just launched our Online CV service’ which through to August 31st will remain at an introductory rate of just £25, with a completed CV beling delivered via email within 3 working days. This package complements the ‘Professional CV Service’ which we have also temporarily reduced to £50.00.

Double Finalists

As many of you know in December last year, The Burford Recruitment Company were delighted to be shortlisted in both the New Business Award and Micro Business Award categories in the West Oxfordshire Business Awards (for the second year running).

January was incredibly busy for us here at The Burford Recruitment Company, with the interviews with representatives of the sponsors and organisers (including Blenheim Palace, Timms Wealth Management, NGI Finance and Witney Business & Innovation Centre) all coming within days of moving into our lovely new home at Woodgrove Farm in Fulbrook, Burford, and Carla joining our team.

The tight schedule and extra work has however proved to have been well worthwhile.

At the Celebration of Business held at Cokethorpe School on Thursday night we were included in the final 3 businesses in both categories.

The awards ceremony itself will be held at Heythrop Park on March 27th and we are greatly looking forward to enjoying it regardless of the outcome!

Hopefully we may see some of you there!

The West Oxfordshire Business Awards 2019 – #2019WOBAs

So the West Oxfordshire Business Awards (WOBAs) are over for another year.

For those of you new to the West Oxfordshire Business Awards (WOBAs), they recognise the very best businesses in West Oxfordshire, comparing businesses across a number of different categories depending on industry and size. At the 2019 awards, The Burford Recruitment Company were delighted to make the shortlist in two of those categories.

The New Business Award (focussing on businesses launched in the previous 3 years), and the Micro Business Award focussing on the smaller businesses. 

While we unfortunately did not make the final three in either category,  getting shortlisted was a great success in only our second full year of trading.

Creating our submission, and the subsequent interview process enabled us to reflect on the performance of our business, and generate new ideas for moving forward. Most pleasing was that external judges confirmed that we do a great job for our clients and candidates and that our brand reflects both us individually as well as our business. 

We really enjoyed the experience, and would recommend any business in West Oxfordshire take a look and get involved next year! We will certainly be applying again in 2020 and hopefully getting even further in the process.
